Understanding Ear Wax (Cerumen)
Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It plays an essential role in protecting the ears by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms, helping to prevent infections. While ear wax usually moves out of the ear naturally, a buildup can sometimes occur, Excess ear wax (cerumen) can cause a blocked feeling, ringing in the ears, Pain in the ears, or even temporary hearing loss.
Before Your Ear Wax Removal Appointment
To ensure a smooth and effective procedure, we recommend the following before your visit:
Soften the wax: Use olive oil or over-the-counter ear drops (e.g., Earwax or Otex) in the affected ear(s) once or twice daily for 3–5 days before your appointment. This helps soften the wax, making removal easier and more comfortable.
Avoid using cotton buds: Inserting anything into the ear canal can push the wax further in and cause irritation or damage.

At Elvaston Medical Clinic, we offer safe and effective ear wax removal to help relieve discomfort, improve hearing, and support overall ear health. Our trained professionals use one of the commonly used modern techniques: including micro-suction or irrigation/syringing:
- Microsuction is a safe, dry method of ear wax removal using gentle suction under direct vision. Quick, precise, and comfortable.
- Irrigation is used when the wax is soft and there’s no history of ear problems like perforation or infection. It involves gently flushing the ear with warm water. The clinician will choose the safest method for you.
Either of the procedures will last about 15-30 minutes.
After Ear Wax Removal
- Avoid inserting anything into your ear for at least 24 hours.
- Keep your ears dry and avoid swimming or bathing that wets the ear canal for 1–2 days.
- You may experience mild discomfort or ringing, which should settle quickly.

I had just arrived in London from Canada. I was starting a 3 week holiday and had developed a very serious sinus infection and needed a doctor to confirm and perscribe some antibiotics. I found the Elanston Clinic near our hotel. We booked an appointment online and showed up hoping we could see someone. They were fast and personable. The doctor did an exam and was able to send a perscription that afternoon. I was so relieved we had found someone to help. I highly recommend this clinic. They saved my holiday!

Highly recommended clinic with normal rates. I was visiting London and able to make an appointment the same morning. Dr Debel took the time for a thorough anamnesis and diagnosis. He prescribed medication that made me feel better quickly, and answered all my questions and gave me a good advice. I received a clear report and invoice for my own GP and insurer by email. He was even kind enough to have me come in for follow-up visits, which really showed his commitment to his patients and that he goes the extra mile to make sure that I was completely recovered. I was very lucky to call, make an appointment and to be seen a few hours later. We arrived early and the doctor was ready for us, which is quite unusual. He was thorough and attentive. If I come back to London and fall ill again, will definitely come back here. It was one of the best medical clinic experiences I have had in a long time. A little bit on the pricey side but it is worth it for excellent service.

I was traveling and became ill with fever, headache and fatigue, unable to leave my hotel room. The good Dr. Abdul paid a visit, ran tests, arranged IV fluids, and began antibiotics treatment. Within 24 hours I was recovering well. I cannot praise enough the quick visit (within an hour) and the compassionate care I received while so far away from home.
I would like to thank Dr Debel for his wonderful care and attention. Very lovely and professional atmosphere. The clinic is on top quality standards.
